Social Media in Education
Social Media in
Education
Social Media plays an important
role into today’s classroom. Many students have grown up using social media in
their day to day lives. Below are three social media resources that could be
used to help educators in the classroom.
World War II colourized
(Facebook): This resource on
Facebook is useful because of its updating of photos of historical
significance. World War II colourized is a community of photoshop editors who
colorize black and white photographs from World War II. This resource is useful
because it allows the user to see World War II events in full color. Because
pictures are so important in history, a photo that has been colorized bridges
the time gaps and makes people and places in history seem more alive and real.
I have used this resource often throughout my classes. Students are engaged and
intrigued by the colorized photos which generates more conversation about the
topic.

Extra History (YouTube): Extra History is a YouTube channel dedicated
to history and mythology. This channel is useful for teachers in the classroom
because it uses animated characters to tell the story. Students often enjoy
these videos because they are short and informative. Another benefit of Extra
History is that it covers a wide variety of historical topics. From Rome to the
Modern day, teachers are able to use Extra History in order to teach a
multitude of content in their classroom. I have found in my own classroom that
students would look forward to Extra History because of how the content was
broken down for everyone to understand.

The History
Junkie (blogger): blogger is a blog
site where anyone can post their own ideas. The History Junkie Blog is full of
useful information for both teachers and students. The blog covers a wide
variety of topics from the Ancient World to Modern World History. This blog
would be useful for the classroom because it breaks the topics down for
students. This allows the students to better understand the information and in
turn process what they have learned. I
found this blog particularly useful because the writer poses questions to the
readers before the start of each paragraph. The blogger also lists his research
links and resources for readers to find new information on their own .
